General Bipin Rawat is the first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) in India. The Chief of Defense Staff of the Indian Armed Forces is the military head and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of the Indian Armed Forces. The CDS is the highest ranking officer in uniform and the highest ranking officer on active duty in the Indian army.

Early Life, Childhood & Education

Rawat was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand, on March 16, 1958, to a Garhwali Rajput Hindu family. His family served with the Indian army for many generations. Her father Laxman Singh Rawat came from the village of Sainj in the Pauri Garhwal district and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. His mother was originally from the Uttarkashi district and was the daughter of Kishan Singh Parmar, the former MLA of Uttarkashi.

Rawat attended Cambrian Hall at Dehradun and St. Edward’s in Shimla.  He subsequently joined the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he received the “sword of honor”.

Military career of General Bipin Rawat

• Rawat was commissioned in the Fifth Battalion of 11 Gorkha rifles on 16 December 1978.
• The same unit as his father.
• He was in charge of a company in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir as Major.
• After his promotion to Major General, Rawat took the lead of the 19th Infantry Division (Uri)
• He also held staff positions, including a position as a teacher at the Indian Military Academy (Dehradun).
